Unsurprisingly, the Golden Globes has apparently decided to shut out female directors from their nominees. Yet again. I wish I could say this was the exception but in modern filmmaking, this appears to be more of a rule.

As a budding filmmaker myself, this is incredibly disheartening. My personal view is that no one sets out to win awards, they make films to tell stories. If they happen to win an award for it that’s just icing on the cake. Even so, we know that winning awards can help propel a filmmakers career to new heights and help them to secure funding for their next project. So it goes without saying, I’d like to see more female filmmakers given that same chance.

According to Variety, only a whopping five women, in the entire history of the Golden Globes have been nominated for the best director award. And of those five women, only one, Barbra Streisand, actually took home the award. In honour of the fact that I wholeheartedly believe that we don’t give female filmmakers enough cred, I’d like to share a short (and 100% not all-encompassing list) of females who are doing amazing work in film.
